Cavaliers 82- Boston Celtics 107
by Brian Hagerman

Cleveland Cavaliers @ Boston Celtics 1/9/04

The Cleveland Cavaliers traveled to Boston to take on the Celtics in the first of a five game road trip. Apparently the Cavaliers left their game gear at home and used their practice gear to suit up, as Boston rolled to a 107-82 victory. Paul Pierce was two assists shy of a triple-double with 30 points, 12 rebounds, and eight assists before sitting out most of the fourth quarter. LeBron James had a quiet 19 points (7-19) to lead the Cavaliers, who lost to the Celtics for the 13th straight game.

The Cavaliers went ahead early 11-10, but Boston went on a 14-2 run and held a 35-21 lead at the end of the first quarter. Carlos Boozer, DeSagana Diop, and Tony Battie each chipped in four-second quarter points to cut into the Boston lead. A Kendrick Brown lay-up and a DaJuan Wagner jumper pulled the Cavaliers within nine at halftime.

But it was all Celtics from there. Boston nailed five three-pointers and nine free throws to help extend their lead to 82-67 after three quarters. Pierce had thirteen of his 30 pts. in the third quarter in helping Boston pad their lead. Jason Kapona was a bright spot for the Cavaliers during the third period. He scored the Cavaliers last seven points of the period, including two three pointers.

The Cavaliers fourth quarter seemed to be playground basketball at its worst. Bad passing, missed opportunities, sloppy defense, poor shot selection, and terrible transition defense (pretty much the whole game summed up into one quarter). Boston outscored Cleveland 25-15 during the fourth. Kapono's lay-up with 9:49 left was the only field goal made by the Cavaliers during the first six minutes of the quarter until Darius Miles hit a three with about 5:41 to go in the game.

For the game, the Cavaliers shot a woeful 33 percent from the field, 26 percent from beyond the arc, and 63 percent from the line. Wagner still looking rusty (1-7 from the field) and Eric Williams in foul trouble (five fouls in 19 minutes) put too much of the load on LeBron to lead the charge. Zydrunas Ilgauskas didn't carry his weight, going 20 minutes with five points and eight rebounds. Boston shot 46 percent from the field, 44 percent from the arc, and 75 percent from the line. You could tell Ricky Davis' energy was high for the game as he hounded James up the court and play some decent defense overall. Which is funny, cause he seems to play defense, really, only when he feels like it. Davis ended up with 16 pts. and a nice 5-turnover night. Tony Battie showed a little extra motivation adding 10 pts, 13 rebounds, and two steals.
